ABOUT THE PROJECT

UHN - Designing for Healthcare Connectivity

The University of Toronto's Intranet Design Class Project tasked our group with creating an intuitive, collaborative digital workspace for UHN Toronto, a renowned network of ten healthcare facilities. As the sole UX/UI designer, my responsibility was to architect a user experience that streamlined inter-hospital and cross-facility communication and document sharing, supporting UHN's mission for outstanding patient care and innovation. This class project allowed me to explore real-world scenarios where efficient information flow is crucial. By designing an intranet prototype, I crafted a solution that could potentially bridge the gaps in current healthcare communication systems, ensuring timely and accurate exchanges among medical professionals and enhancing patient management across UHN's multiple locations. My contributions demonstrate a blend of academic theory and practical design applications, providing a foundation for future endeavors in complex systems design.

01 IDEAS

Intranet Innovation for Healthcare

Streamlined patient information access

This intranet design simplifies the retrieval and management of patient information, allowing healthcare professionals to easily access and update medical records, ensuring timely and informed patient care.

Efficient communication channels

The intranet includes dedicated communication tools designed for healthcare teams, facilitating instant and clear conversations, and enabling the sharing of patient updates, medical images, and files, directly contributing to more coordinated patient care.

Secure document sharing and management

Recognizing the importance of knowledge sharing in healthcare, the intranet provides a secure platform for doctors to access and contribute to a repository of medical documents, research, and case studies, thereby fostering a culture of continuous learning and collaboration.

Cross-facility collaboration

The design addresses the challenge of inter-hospital communication by creating cross-facility information channels. This not only streamlines workflows but also ensures that patients receive consistent care regardless of their location within the UHN system.

02 SOLUTION

Digital Solution for UHN

Intuitive intranet interface

This prototype presents a straightforward and accessible intranet system crafted for the diverse needs of UHN’s healthcare network. It features easy-to-use navigation and efficient communication tools, ensuring that vital information is just a few clicks away. The design prioritizes clear and quick access to patient data, staff interactions, and essential documents, promoting better cooperation and coordination across all UHN facilities.

03 REFLECTION

What did I learn?

Intuitive healthcare interface design

Through the UHN project, I have refined my ability to create intuitive user experiences and interfaces, particularly in the intricate domain of healthcare. This project has instilled in me a confidence in dissecting complex information structures and transforming them into user-friendly designs that facilitate critical inter-hospital communication and patient information management.

Effective interdisciplinary collaboration

This experience has taught me the importance and effectiveness of interdisciplinary collaboration. As the sole designer among researchers and strategists, I have learned to bridge the gap between technical feasibility and design desirability, ensuring that our solutions are both innovative and grounded in real-world applications.

Enhanced design agility

Working on the UHN project has bolstered my adaptability in design thinking. With a focus on healthcare professionals' needs, I have become adept at swiftly iterating prototypes and incorporating feedback, ensuring that the final design not only meets but exceeds user expectations and requirements.
